An artist’s decade-long look at masculinity and homophobia is ending with a spectacular funeral at Toynbee Studios.
Artist Nando Messias will put to rest Sissy, his persona exploring effeminate men, at the Commercial Street arts centre alongside a temporary museum telling the character’s story.
His previous work includes The Sissy’s Progress, which turned his homophobic attack by a gang of eight men into a defiant walk through homophobic crime scenes with a marching band in tow.
Nando, who identifies as queer, was born in Brazil and moved to London to study for his master’s degree. He completed a PhD at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2011 and has gone on to perform at art centres including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and Tate Britain.
Where 4 Roads Meet: Death and the Sissy starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 12. Tickets are £12.
