The Museum of Docklands has acquired its own rabbit to celebrate Chinese New Year which it wants visitors to find in February.

The tinplate toy of a rabbit family, manufactured by German toy maker Johann Meier, isn’t likely to hop and skip away too quickly but it will still pose a challenge to track it down among the museum’s collections and galleries.

Ahead of a series of events to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, eagle-eyed ‘hunters’ stand to win a 50 meal at the Royal China restaurant in Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf if they uncover its hiding place from February 3.

Such toys were imported into London through the docks and sold for one penny and this ‘penny toy’ was purchased from a street trader operating in the St Paul’s area of London in 1906.

Other Chinese New Year events organised by the museum in West India Quay include walks around the original Chinatown in Limehouse and taster sessions in Chinese watercolours, calligraphy and calendar animals - on February 5 and 6.

The rabbit hunt lasts until February 18 when a winner will be picked at random.

Entries should be submitted to rabbithunt@museumoflondon.org.uk and must include the name of entrant, contact details and a description of the rabbit’s location (including which gallery it is in and what else is in the case/display).
