The leading goalscorer in League Two has praised his team mates after hitting his 11th goal of the campaign at Luton Town
Leyton Orient forward Jay Simpson is pleased to put last year behind him and shine under head coach Ian Hendon this season.
The 26-year-old has scored 11 times already in League Two and his goal last night earned the O’s a point at Luton Town.
He is the current leading goalscorer in the division and is enjoying life at Brisbane Road.
It is a stark contrast to last season when he played under four different managers and only scored eight times.
Simpson said: “Last year was a bit of an odd campaign so I am glad that is in the past now and I just enjoy playing football.
“To be out there every week playing is great. I want to be involved in every game, I want to train every day.
“It is enjoyable and I have been able to return the faith that has been shown in me.”
He certainly has done that and the former Arsenal man has also played with a number of partners despite the campaign being only 14 matches old.
Paul McCallum was Simpson’s first and now Ollie Palmer and John Marquis are up alongside him.
The former Millwall man praised the current options available to Hendon for taking some of the hits for him.
“Ollie and John are two big lumps and big presences. They do a lot of battling, a lot of fighting and winning headers,” added Simpson.
“They do take a few knocks for me and I appreciate that. Both work really hard and it is not just winning headers and battling.
“You see them putting a shift in and running in behind as well as tracking back to tackle so they work really hard.”
Palmer and Marquis have both demonstrated already this season they are willing to put the effort in, but neither have the golden touch in front of goal like Simpson.
Despite that, the O’s top goalscorer doesn’t feel the pressure and instead praised his team mates for creating chances for him.
He added: “I don’t feel the pressure and at Luton if Sean doesn’t put a great ball in for me like he did then I don’t score at the end of the day.
“It is a team game and we are all working hard. I have scored a fair few, which I am happy with, but the team has all chipped in. I haven’t done it by myself.”
