Former Millwall midfielder delighted after helping Orient move out of bottom four
The last time Josh Wright scored was back in February 2012 and his strike for Millwall against Burnley won Championship goal of the season.
Although his effort against Coventry City last night wasn’t like his last goal, a thunderbolt from outside the box, his first for Leyton Orient meant so much to the passionate 25-year-old.
It ensured O’s earned all three points at the Ricoh Arena to move out of the bottom four for the first time since January.
Wright admitted it was a “dream come true” moment to score the winner and in the process net for the first time in Orient colours.
“The last time I scored was for Millwall,” he said. “It ended up winning goal of the season and although it was a great goal, last night’s meant more to me because of what this club means to me and how much it meant to everyone associated with the club.
“It was a fantastic moment for me and the club. It was crucial for us to go there and get a positive result, be that a win or a draw, so we could move out of the relegation places. It was a tough game, but we did what we had to do.
“It could turn out to be a massive goal because it lifts us out of the relegation places and means all our fans can watch the results come in over Easter a little easier.”
Orient boss Fabio Liverani changed tactics several times during last night’s 1-0 triumph and in the end it proved decisive.
Wright praised the Brisbane Road boss and admitted he is enjoying his football under the Italian.
And after finding the net for the first time in three years, the midfielder acknowledged he may need to shoot more often now.
“Last night we changed tactics in second half and it allowed me to push forward more and I had more of a license,” added Wright.
“Luckily when I got the chance I took it and it was a fantastic feeling for me, but also for all the players, the staff, the fans and everyone associated with the club.
“I am not a striker and I don’t score too many, but when you do I can’t explain the feeling. It is a dream come true, whatever you want to call it, because this club means so much to me.
“Fabio is brilliant and I am really enjoying working with him. He demands a lot from you, but you need that in football and every day life.
“He is sometimes shouting out at me to shoot more in training and out on the pitch so maybe I will do it more often.”
The three points for the O’s could turn out to be massive and gives them a huge opportunity of beating the drop.
Wright, who joined the club permanently in January, insists everyone at the club is certain they will survive.
He added: “It is a horrible being in the bottom four and every time you win a game it seems everyone around you wins.
“And then every time you lose a game it seems everyone around you loses so you miss the chance to get out of it, but we are all fighting for our lives.
“I can assure you everyone associated with the club is doing everything they possibly can to get us out of this mess and we are confident we will.”
