Justin Edinburgh: Maidenhead United defeat shows there is plenty of work for Leyton Orient still to do ahead of next season

The O’s boss expressed his frustration with the 1-0 loss, but provided positive news on the future of teenagers Myles Judd and Josh Koroma

Leyton Orient head coach Justin Edinburgh was saddened to see his players produce a limp display in their final home game of the National League season against Maidenhead United last night.

A Ryan Upward goal in the fifth minute was enough to give the Magpies all three points and a famous 1-0 win at Brisbane Road.

Orient only really tested Maidenhead custodian Carl Pentney on one occasion and the O’s boss couldn’t hide his disappointment.

Edinburgh said: “I said to the players before the game this was our last chance to leave a good and positive impression on the home fans and we haven’t done that, which saddens me really because we have made huge strides home and away.

“We have shown real consistency of late, but as I said afterwards; if we think we have reached an acceptable level, we have not.

“I am a demanding manager and we haven’t reached the levels I expect against Maidenhead and we got what we deserved and it is frustrating because it mirrors the game against Torquay United (1-0 defeat at home on March 13.

“We fell behind and then we were playing a team who were happy to sit in, but we didn’t show enough intelligence to get back in the game.”

Pentney was not called into action much, but he should have been tested deep into stoppage time when O’s finally created a significant chance of note.

Substitute Lamar Reynolds got to the byline and cut back for Ebou Adams, but the Norwich City loanee blazed over from eight-yards.

Edinburgh admitted: “When we did get the chance, it summed up the night. It has almost gone over the stand and that is where we are at.

“I won’t stand here and say there has not been a lot of improvement because there has. There have been plenty of positives, but this defeat is another slight bump in the road. We will learn from it though.”

You would certainly back the squad to become stronger from a result like this and one big thing Edinburgh has instilled in this team is an ability to bounce back from poor results.

Every time Orient have lost under their current head coach, they’ve either won or drawn the next game.

The hope will be they can do the same on Saturday away to Gateshead and the match will be another chance for some of the club’s youngsters to impress.

Two of them, Myles Judd and Josh Koroma, are out of contract on June 30, but there is positive news regarding their futures.

It has always been understood Orient have the option to extend Koroma’s deal by a further 12 months should they wish to do so and it seems Judd has something similar in his contract, which is great news for O’s given the obvious potential of the duo.

Edinburgh said: “I believe both of them have clauses in their contract which we will exercise to keep them at the club for next season.”
