The O’s needed extra-time to reach the last-16 of the competition after enduring a tricky clash with the National League South side

Justin Edinburgh was disappointed with Leyton Orient’s performance away to Bognor Regis Town in the second round of the FA Trophy on Saturday, but happy to see them progress into the last-16 of the competition.

The hosts were reduced to 10-men in the 59th minute when Richard Gilot was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Orient were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage and saw a player of their own red carded with 12 minutes left when Joe Widdowson picked up a second yellow.

It failed to stop Macauley Bonne opening the scoring in the 83rd minute following a Matt Harrold assist.

But there was still time for late drama at Nyewood Lane as Jimmy Muitt smashed in from range to send the tie to extra-time.

The Orient head coach had introduced Josh Koroma by this point and the teenager proved to be the matchwinner with a stunning goal of his own in the 105th minute and O’s held on to progress into the next round.

“We made extremely hard work of the game,” Edinburgh told the official club website.

“Obviously the scoreline is the important one in a cup competition, but we were below the standards we’ve set over the last four to six games. In all I’m pleased with the result of course, but disappointed with the performance.”

A positive for the O’s was the return of George Elokobi following a four-month absence following hamstring injury.

The ex-Colchester United defender played an hour at Bognor before coming off, but despite appearing to be in some discomfort with his ankle, he was fine.

Edinburgh added: “There were positives to take from the game, not many as a collective, but individually George got 60 minutes after a long period of time out.

“It was a good game to get him back into the swing of things and he showed no ill-effects after, so we are pleased with that.

“We gave Lamar (Reynolds) his full debut and he showed glimpses. On another day he probably could have had four or five goals, so I’m happy with that.

“There are some bright things to take away from the game and Jobi McAnuff, again, was outstanding from start to finish.

“I said to the players after for someone to have achieved what he has and at the age he is, that’s an example and a standard for the players to meet every week.”
