The O’s produced a resolute display to leave North Wales with three points and remain top of the National League table

Justin Edinburgh heaped praise on his Leyton Orient team and goalkeeper Dean Brill after their 2-0 win at Wrexham on Saturday.

The O’s made the lengthy trip to the Racecourse Ground looking to land a blow on a National League title rival.

Both clubs had enjoyed superb starts to the campaign, but it was the visitors who picked up three points thanks to Macauley Bonne and James Brophy goals.

Orient’s two strikes occurred in the final exchanges in Wales and only happened after goalkeeper Brill had made two outstanding saves to deny Rekeil Pyke and Dragons skipper Shaun Pearson.

Edinburgh told the National League website: “There was no coming back after the second goal, but we had to call upon our goalkeeper to make some big saves for one of the first times of the season and when called upon, he was outstanding.”

After a fairly quiet opening, with no real clear-cut chances created, the hosts should have taken the lead in the 23rd minute.

Pyke raced through on goal and with only Brill to beat looked to find the bottom corner, but the experienced O’s custodian stuck out a leg and blocked the shot.

It ensured it was goalless at the break and the next opportunity of note occurred in the 63rd minute, but again Brill come to the fore.

A Wrexham corner picked out Pearson, but his low header was brilliantly saved by O’s stopper.

Those saves proved crucial as with time running out, Orient made the breakthrough when a corner dropped for Bonne and he rifled home with venom.

With only four minutes left, the visitors were in front and now they were making the most of Wrexham pushing forward.

Josh Koroma dribbled past a number of opponents soon after the opener, but fired against the post from range before the second goal arrived.

Substitute James Alabi chased a lost cause and forced Wrexham goalkeeper Rob Lainton to come out and head clear, but only as far as Brophy and he volleyed home sumptuously to wrap up the statement win.

Edinburgh added: “I’m really pleased. We had to dig in and be resolute. We defended for our lives, but when the chances come along we dispatched them clinically. I think this is a huge three points.

“Something had to give and fortunately for us our unbeaten away record stayed intact. We are the first team to come here and win so it makes it even more special.”
