KEVAN Collins has been appointed to the top job at Tower Hamlets council in East London.

He takes over the £190,000 chief executive post after working as acting chief since the controversial departure of Martin Smith in June.

Former teacher Mr Collins was the authority’s first head of Children’s Services and joined Tower Hamlets in 2005 from the Government’s Primary National Strategy which he headed up.

He was appointed to the top Town Hall job this-afternoon after a shortlist seven candidates were interviewed, including the boss of a council in a seaside town.

Mr Smith was given a £300,000 payoff when he left the council after serving two years in the top job.
