SCHOOLKIDS who gave up their summer holiday to get work experience on building sites in East London have received awards at a special ceremony.
The 81 youngsters from the five Olympics 'host' boroughs who signed up to the programme received their certificates at the Carpenters' Company in the City of London, including 15 from Tower Hamlets.
The project led by Newham College, funded by the London Development Agency, was designed to encourage school-leavers to consider careers in construction and to give them experience in the workplace.
Project manager Sue Kershaw said: "Vocational skills are now an essential part of education and it is important that youngsters have opportunities to make informed choices for further education and their career."
Those taking part had to give up their summer break as the programme started mid-July and ran until the end of August.
But it gave them the chance of future jobs or apprenticeships. Several are still working for the firms they were assigned to, including some on a full-time basis.
