SCHOOLCHILDREN led by example, putting their best foot forward to launch a winter walk campaign in the East End.

More than 200 young trekkers used Mile End Park’s revolutionary ‘swipe and go’ system – which lets residents use an electronic card to work out how far they have walked.

The park was the first in the world to install the new technology.

In a joint scheme between Tower Hamlets Council and NHS Tower Hamlets, 12 one-mile walks that take in some of the borough’s best sites have been mapped out.

The plan is to get more adults and children walking, even on chillier days.

The campaign will run until March 2011.

Everyone who signs up at will get a free goody bag including a water bottle, pedometer and copies of the routes.
