PUPILS have quizzed the local authority on green issues in the borough which has Britain’s worst recycling record.

They invited Abdal Ullah, Lead member for Green Issues at Tower Hamlets council, to the Central Foundation Girls’ School in East London for their own version of Question Time.

He answered points about the environment as part of Year-11’s citizenship project when they gave a presentation on recycling in which they interviewed households.

One pupil, 16-year-old Moshkara Begum from Stepney, said: “We wanted to look at why some people don’t recycle and what could be done to encourage them to start.

“People we spoke to had difficulty getting hold of pink recycle sacks and sometimes had problems with collections, which put them off.”

The pupils had encountered the problems householders say they face which have left Tower Hamlets at the bottom of the national leaguer table of local authority recycling for two years running, at just seven per cent two years ago and 13 per cent last year.

Cllr Ullah took on board issues raised by the girls and promised to work toward resolving them.
