Kittens found dumped in Victoria Park with horrific injuries spark £7,000 in donations

The kittens, one of whom had his toes and tail severed, were found taped up in a wet cardboard box by a passer-by in Victoria Park.

They arrived at the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, in Canning Town, covered in fleas and barely able to walk.

But a fundraising campaign to pay for their intensive care and reconstructive surgery had passed the £7,000 mark as of midday today.

Celia Hammond, who runs the charity, said that while there is still a long way to go, Luke and Skywalker are recovering well.

“They were so badly injured that we didn’t know if they were going to make it, although they are doing remarkably well now.

“The difficult thing now is stopping them from jumping around. We had trouble taking pictures of them as they were dancing up and down.”

Ms Hammond said it is not known whether the injuries, sustained last month, were inflicted deliberately.

But she said: “With the person who dumped them, we would have at least hoped he or she would have taken the cats to a vet.”

Luke’s toes and back of his tail were severed. Skywalker was barely able to walk after x-rays revealed he had suffered a spinal injury.

It means Ms Hammond is “incredibly grateful” for the support her charity has received from the fundraising campaign.

“They need such intensive care and Luke will need his foot re-dressed two or three times,” she said.

“All this treatment comes at a cost and they have had quite a lot of surgery already. It’s difficult to say the amount that will cover their treatment, but it costs a fortune to run the clinic anyway, and we are always losing money so anything we get is gratefully received.”
