Labour council leader re-elected for a 2nd year

THE ruling Labour Group of councillors at Tower Hamlets in East London has re-elected Lutfur Rahman as Leader of the local authority.
He secured a second year in office at the Group’s annual meeting on Monday, the group revealed this afternoon.
Josh Peck was elected Deputy Leader when Sirajul Islam stepped down after three years in the post.
Former Deputy Mayor Ahmed Omer becomes the East End’s first civic Mayor from its growing Somali community.
Lutfa Begum is new Deputy Mayor, the first Bangladeshi woman to hold the post.
Cllr Rahman said in a statement issued today: “There will be big challenges in the coming year—not least due to the economy.”

The appointments take effect at Tower Hamlets annual council meeting on May 22.
