A landlord was left stunned when he discovered an estate agent had given his tenant permission to put up a wall in his flat without anyone telling him about it.

Glenn Jarman let his property in Canary Wharf out to a tenant through estate agents Atkinson Mcleod.

And unbeknown to him, his tenant had secured permission to put up a wall in the living room to create another bedroom in the flat in Boardwalk Place.

“I found out because the tenant had also rented out the parking space,” the 40-year-old said. “I confronted the tenant and he said ‘I thought you knew. You know about the partition wall, don’t you?’

“I was expecting to give him a slap on the wrist about the parking space.”

But Glenn, a professional landlord, was left furious when he found out this summer that the tenant could in fact produce written permission from the letting agent in which he was given permission to erect the wall.

“He has got an email from the letting agent saying ‘yes it’s ok to partition’. From his point of view he got something black and white from the letting agent saying it’s fine.”

And now Glenn is demanding Atkinson Mcleod compensate him for the ordeal.

“I want them to make amends,” he said. “I think what they have done is absolutely shocking.

“It’s a bunch of hassle and it’s all caused by an agent being a bit loose with the truth.”

When Atkinson Mcleod’s Canary Wharf office was contacted by this newspaper, a representative describing himself as a senior lettings manager said Glenn’s complaint was “nothing to do with me”.

“The woman [agent] in question left the company about eight months ago,” he said. “It’s not anything to do with me – I am running an office here.”
