A multi-million pound block of flats being built in Bow Wharf has been badly damaged after a fire tore through the building.

Firefighters were called to the four-storey development – which nobody has yet moved in to – on Wennington Road shortly after 11am yesterday.

It took around 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines to battle the blaze, which was put out within around three hours.

Two aerial appliances were also sent to the scene to fight the fire from above.

The third floor and roof were said to have suffered the most damage, having been fully alight, with parts of the second and third floors also affected.

Road closures were put in place around the area while crews tackled the fire.

Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
