A national campaign to help schools utilise former students as mentors, was kick-started by a former England footballer at a school in Tower Hamlets.
Retired Tottenham Hotspur captain Ledley King got the scheme underway by visiting his former state school Olga Primary School, Lanfranc Road, on Wednesday, October 16.
The scheme is part of Back to School week from October 14 to October 19 and is the country’s first school-based volunteering campaign, which was launched by i newspaper in partnership with social enterprise charity Future First, to help over 500 state schools and colleges to use the talent and expertise of former students as mentors and to encourage people to reconnect with their old school networks.
Mr King is one of 50,000 people across Britain who have signed up to support their old school and more than 500 state schools have registered with Future First to run alumni networks.
