At the start of the season many would have predicted the O’s to win the title, but it is the Silkmen who are on the verge of being champions

Macclesfield Town manager John Askey believes Leyton Orient are in a false position in the National League table, but remains confident his players can secure another win this weekend in front of the BT Sport cameras.

The Silkmen are within touching distance of claiming the title and can clinch it if they beat the O’s in Saturday’s 12.30pm kick-off and second-placed Tranmere Rovers fail to defeat Aldershot Town hours later.

Orient were hoping to be involved in the promotion mix, but a 15-game run without a victory has seen them in a relegation battle for most of the season.

Justin Edinburgh has turned things around though, and the east Londoners are 12th now, but Askey feels they should be higher.

“We have just got to take each game as it comes. I think Leyton Orient are in a false position,” Macclesfield’s manager told Silk 106.9’s Alastair Pattrick.

“They have got some decent players, the new manager has come in and got them organised and they have done a lot better.

“But it is on home soil, we’ll have a big crowd behind us and hopefully they can spur us on to three points.”

Macclesfield’s form over the last two months has been excellent, especially with so much pressure on them at the top.

Askey’s men have won nine of their previous 12 games and earned an impressive 2-0 win at Boreham Wood on Tuesday.

The Silkmen boss praised the mentality of his squad after two Tyrone Marsh goals saw them to victory at Meadow Park.

He said: “Before the game everybody was obviously nervous except for the players and coming to a place like Boreham Wood it is always tough, they are a very good side, but I thought we were very professional.

“The players have been fantastic again and showed why we are where we are and it gives us a fantastic chance to do it with three games to go and two at home and we have got to get four points.

“At one point on Tuesday I thought we might do it on the night because Tranmere were two down at one stage, but it shows we have no nerves. We are here to do a job and we’ve just got to finish it off now.”

Macclesfield will look to earn another three points on Saturday, but for Orient the chance to send out a statement is an exciting prospect. A close encounter appears in store.
