The 25-year-old talks about the confidence in the O’s camp after their December revival under Justin Edinburgh

Leyton Orient midfielder Craig Clay is relishing the prospect of facing Boreham Wood again and confident the O’s can see off their high-flying National League rivals on Saturday.

Justin Edinburgh’s men began 2018 with a hard-fought goalless draw at Dagenham & Redbridge on Monday, but they’ll look to return to winning ways at Brisbane Road this weekend.

Boreham Wood will provide them with a tough test though, and sit just outside of the play-off positions in eighth place after a 1-1 draw at Sutton United on Monday.

There is plenty of belief back in the O’s camp, however, following recent wins over Sutton, Maidstone United and Dagenham (in the first league meeting on Boxing Day).

Clay said: “We are going to worry about what we do and not focus too much on them and we don’t fear anyone at the moment.

“All the big teams, the ones who are up there in the table, have come to our place recently like Dover Athletic, Sutton, Dagenham and Bromley and the performances and scores have shown what we can do.

“We have dominated in those games so we will do our work this week and our high intensity training and be ready for Saturday’s game.”

The mood at Brisbane Road right now is in complete contrast to when the club were struggling for victories and went just over three months without a league success.

Steve Davis lost his job as a result of that run and a 2-0 defeat away to Boreham Wood on September 9 was the catalyst for a sudden loss in form and belief at Orient.

It was a difficult time for players, staff and the O’s supporters, but Clay is optimistic 2018 will be a lot better with Edinburgh making his mark and more new signings expected this month.

The midfielder added: “It was probably the worst time I’ve had in my career and the longest spell I’ve had without a league win and I’m sure it was the same for a lot of the other boys.

“Naturally your confidence is going to go, but thankfully we are out of that now and there is still a long way to go this season and the confidence is back again.

“We know if we can string two, three or four wins together we can get on another run and we’ve proven ourselves against some of the teams who are up there. We have dominated them, so we will take it game by game, but we are confident again now.”
