National League: Gateshead 1 Leyton Orient 3

Leyton Orient finished their National League campaign with an impressive 3-1 win at Gateshead this afternoon.

Macauley Bonne opened the scoring in the North East and second-half strikes from Jobi McAnuff and Josh Koroma sealed another victory for Justin Edinburgh’s men.

The O’s head coach made two changes to the team which lost 1-0 on Tuesday night to Maidenhead United.

Charlie Lee and David Mooney started with Craig Clay dropping to the bench and James Brophy missing out due to injury.

Orient started strongly and with 17 minutes on the clock they opened the scoring at the International Stadium.

McAnuff’s corner was flicked home by Bonne for his 25th goal of the campaign in all competitions and 22nd in the league.

Further chances were created by the O’s, but Bonne and Koroma were unable to take them as it remained 1-0 at the break.

After finishing the second period strongly, Orient did the same after the restart and it was 2-0 with 53 played.

Mooney received the ball in a dangerous position and cut back for McAnuff, who fired into the top corner for his sixth goal of the season.

It was 3-0 on the hour mark when McAnuff’s pass found Koroma and he brushed past his marker before finding the net.

Edinburgh introduced 17-year-old Charles Clayden for his first-team debut soon after with Lee making way.

Gateshead did muster a response on the stroke of full time when Ebou Adams fouled Rees Greenwood inside the penalty area.

Danny Johnson stepped up and sent Dean Brill the wrong way, but it mattered little in the end as Orient secured an excellent 3-1 success.

It ensured the O’s ended the season with a win and a 13th-placed finish which will add to the optimism ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
