National League: Wrexham 2 Leyton Orient 2

Goals from Macauley Bonne and Mark Ellis helped Leyton Orient pick up a point away to Wrexham.

The pressure was growing on Steve Davis ahead of the match at the Racecourse Ground, but the O’s put in a spirited display in North Wales to halt their two-match losing run in the National League.

Davis made four changes to the Orient side beaten 2-0 at home to Gateshead on Tuesday night.

Joe Widdowson missed out with a hamstring problem, while Jobi McAnuff was suspended so Jamie Sendles-White and James Dayton started.

Zain Westbrooke made his full debut for the O’s while Rommy Boco returned with Craig Clay and Myles Judd dropping to the bench.

After back-to-back defeats at home, Davis would have hoped for a strong start by his side, but they conceded inside 60 seconds.

Chris Holroyd was on hand to fire home a deflected cross with just one minute on the clock to give Wrexham the lead.

It was all the hosts during the opening exchanges, but O’s eventually settled and had the ball in the net after 10 minutes, but Bonne’s effort was ruled out for a foul.

Wrexham nearly made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when James Jennings glanced towards goal from a corner, but Mark Ellis was well placed to clear.

Two minutes later and Orient should have found the net when Sendles-White had a header cleared off the line before Bonne’s effort was also denied.

In the 23rd minute O’s did have the ball in the back of the net in fortunate circumstances, as Bonne’s cross blew into the top corner.

Orient weren’t complaining, but Wrexham nearly retook the lead in the 27th minute when Shaun Pearson headed wide.

Davis’ team responded when James Brophy brought the ball forward and found Boco, but he could only curl over.

Both teams pushed for the third goal of the game after, but neither could create anything of note and it remained 1-1 at the break.

Wrexham started the second half strongly and piled the pressure on the O’s in the opening minutes after the restart.

Orient managed to prevent the hosts creating anything clear-cut and a break in play on the hour mark allowed the visitors to kick on.

Decent play by Mooney in the 64th minute saw the club captain win a free kick in a good position on the edge.

Youngster Dan Happe stepped up, but saw his effort deflected wide and the chance was gone.

The O’s nearly went ahead four minutes later when Dayton let fly and struck a shot against the crossbar.

It would prove to be a key moment as three minutes later Wrexham took the lead through Holroyd.

Paul Rutherford swung the ball in and the Dragons number 10 beat Charlie Grainger to make it 2-1.

Orient made a change soon after with Harrold coming on for Mooney before Ellis needed treatment.

Davis’ second roll of the dice was to introduce Clay in place of Dayton with 10 minutes left.

The O’s pressed for an equaliser with time running out at the Racecourse Ground and Jake Caprice’s cross in the 82nd minute was nearly deflected in by a Wrexham player, but home goalkeeper Chris Dunn managed to get out a hand to save.

But Orient did get back on level terms three minutes later and it occurred through an unlikely source.

Carlisle United loanee powered home a header at the back post and it was enough to earn O’s a point after some brave late goalkeeping by Grainger.
