The O’s have struggled to make the most of home advantage over the last few years, but are keen to change that next season

Leyton Orient head coach Justin Edinburgh is fully aware of the work which needs to take place at Brisbane Road this summer.

The O’s finished their National League campaign on a high with a 3-1 victory away to Gateshead on Saturday.

Orient’s form on the road has generally been adequate this season, but it is at Brisbane Road where they’ve struggled for long periods.

Come the end of the campaign, the east Londoners had claimed 30 points at home and 30 away.

But their record on the road is the 11th best in the league while their form in E10 is the 17th best in the division.

Improvement is needed in both departments, but certainly on home soil where Orient ended with a 1-0 loss to Maidenhead United on April 24 – days after an excellent win by the same scoreline over Wrexham.

Edinburgh said: “When we played Wrexham they came at us and there was something on the game for them (because they were trying to reach the play-offs).

“For Maidenhead, facing Leyton Orient was probably the game they had been looking forward to since the start of the season, so we need to deal with that.

“I don’t quite think we are there mentally to deal with that yet, so that’s a big thing we need to work on and it doesn’t come overnight.

“There have been big problems at home and we have made steps forward, little ones, but we need to keep doing that.”

Orient certainly improved their form at Brisbane Road during the final month of the league campaign.

The O’s defeated Woking (3-0), Barrow (4-1) and Wrexham before disappointingly finishing with a frustrating loss to the Magpies.

Before that Orient had suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Torquay United and also picked up respectable draws with Ebbsfleet United and Tranmere Rovers, both of whom will be competing in the play-offs.

So as Edinburgh pointed out, the east Londoners have taken little steps forward, but it is just the start.

What might also help them next season is the fact they will be familiar with virtually every club in the division, which was not the case come August 5 2017 when Orient visited Sutton United and were clearly surprised by the physicality of the U’s.

Edinburgh concluded: “We have been in the National League for a season now, so we are fully aware of what we are going to face and nothing should surprise us.”
