The 52-year-old insists he can get things right at Brisbane Road and backs himself to turn their form around

Steve Davis understands the frustration of the Leyton Orient supporters, but remains confident he’ll bring the good times back to Brisbane Road.

The 52-year-old had to listen to loud chants of ‘Davis out!’ on Tuesday night with the O’s going down 2-0 at home to Gateshead.

Orient, after a fine start to the campaign, have now won just one of their last 11 games in all competitions.

Davis said: “Yes I can understand the supporters’ frustrations and I’m a fan myself watching Wolverhampton Wanderers, so I know exactly how they feel, but obviously they are top at the moment, so doing all right.

“I do know how they feel and I’ve come out of the ground thinking many times ‘that was terrible’ but I’ve been back the next week to support the team and that’s what a fan does.

“They go through the highs and the lows and I fully understand they have had a lot of lows and I get it 100 per cent.

“The first time there is a run like this in previous seasons a manager gets replaced and I understand that.

“I know why they were frustrated and booing against Gateshead because the performance wasn’t at the level I expect never mind what they expect themselves, so I’ll take that on the chin.

“But what I have got to do is to try and turn this group of players around and be positive because if I’m not positive we won’t (turn it around), so that’s what I’ll do.”

Davis publicly criticised his squad after their 1-0 loss at home to Macclesfield Town on Saturday.

He admitted they were too inconsistent and needed to try and raise their level of performance by 50 per cent.

Yet after not getting the reaction he expected against Gateshead, Davis refuted claims the squad is no longer behind him.

“I think you’d need to speak to the players about that, but I think they are all 100 per cent (behind me),” said Orient’s head coach.

“Even coming out of the dressing room you have George (Elokobi) and all the other players venting their frustration in the same way I am.

“We care and want to put it right and everyone is feeling it at the moment because it’s a tough time and we’ve got to get through it.

“But the only way to get through it is to be positive and we want the supporters to be behind us and stay with us because we will get it right.”

Orient end October with a tough trip to Wrexham this weekend and Davis will hope, after two months of poor results, his team can produce a performance to be proud of on Saturday.
