Recently relegated club have adapted well to life in the National League, but ready for battle at Boreham Wood

Steve Davis insists Leyton Orient are not getting carried away with their impressive start to the new National League season after sitting joint-top of the table with rivals Dagenham & Redbridge after eight games.

The O’s defeated Guiseley 4-1 last Saturday to take their points tally for the campaign to 16 ahead of travelling to Boreham Wood this weekend.

Aside from Orient’s terrible result at Bromley and a poor showing away to Sutton United, the east Londoners have coped well with non-league football so far.

Davis said: “Wherever we play we just want to try and win. We are not going to, but we just want to try and do that, so that’s the approach we are going to take.

“We are not getting carried away because we know how hard it is going to be going forward and Saturday’s victory over Guiseley was a result of a great week.

“The intensity was unbelievable training-wise and we took that into the game last weekend, particularly in the second half.

“We are just trying to do our best and perform well and hopefully the results will follow, but it will be tough at Boreham Wood.”

Luke Garrard’s Hertfordshire-based club have made a decent start to the new campaign and have registered a couple of stand-out results so far – a 2-1 victory at home to Aldershot Town and solid away points at AFC Flyde and Tranmere.

Wood sit 10th in the table after three wins, two draws and three defeats from their opening eight fixtures and O’s head coach Davis knows his team will find it tricky at Meadow Park.

He added: “They have had a good start as well, so we know how difficult it will be and even last Saturday there were times when we found it hard to break Guiseley down.

“What we are trying to do at the moment is wear teams down with our football, so that’s the approach we are taking right now, but we have a plan B in Matt (Harrold), so we can go slightly different.

“We are just trying to find ways of winning games and this league is difficult, but all the players are working hard and we are trying to get the best out of what we’ve got.”

After travelling to Boreham Wood on Saturday, Orient are back at home next Tuesday (September 12) when Halifax Town visit east London with O’s looking for another win at Brisbane Road.

Davis was quizzed about the impact of popular defender George Elokobi after the weekend win over Guiseley.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers ace has quickly endeared himself to the O’s fans and is building a cult status in E10.

“George is a bit crash, bang and wallop at times, but he’s been great and is a brilliant lad. He is immense in the dressing room,” said Davis.

“The media and the supporters don’t really see that and what he does in the background, but every day he comes in smiling.

“He is always happy and helps the kids and motivates the player, so he is almost like another manager in the dressing room. I am delighted because it helps my job and he is my voice out on the pitch.”
