Three of the last four champions have won on the opening day of the season and Orient will hope to do similar on August 4

Leyton Orient are set to find out their fixtures for the 2018/19 National League campaign on Wednesday (July 4) afternoon at 1pm.

Last season, they began at Sutton United and the opener was moved to a 12.30pm kick-off after it was picked to be broadcast live on BT Sport.

The O’s lost the game 2-0 and it was the start of a tough campaign for the club despite initially bouncing back well during the rest of August.

After a settled summer, Orient will be keen to kick start this season on a positive note and a look back to previous years suggests a good opening day can be a springboard to a successful campaign.

Macclesfield Town clinched the National League title last April and began the term with an impressive 1-0 win at Wrexham on August 5 2017.

Lincoln City won the division a year earlier and started the 2016/17 season also with an away victory – this one a 3-1 success at Woking on August 6 2016.

In the 2015/16 campaign, Cheltenham Town got their hands on silverware by taking top spot, but they had to settle for a point on the opening day after a 1-1 draw at Lincoln on August 8 2015.

Barnet, winners of the league in the 2014/15 season, had no such issues in their first game of the term as they smashed Chester 5-0 on the road back on August 9 2014.

John Still’s Luton Town team, champions of the Conference in the 2013/14 campaign, buck the trend though, as they were downed 1-0 at Southport on August 10 2013.

Regardless of what history says, Orient head coach Justin Edinburgh will want his side to start the new season strongly.

The O’s have failed to win on their last two opening days – losing 2-0 at Sutton in 2017 and drawing 1-1 at Cheltenham Town a year earlier.

Ian Hendon did lead Orient to success in the first match of a new season back in the 2015/16 campaign when his new-look team defeated Barnet 2-0 at Brisbane Road in League Two.

Ahead of Wednesday’s fixture release, everyone associated with the club will be eager to see who O’s will face first up.
