FA Trophy: Dover Athletic 3 Leyton Orient 4

Leyton Orient progressed into the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy with a 4-3 victory thanks to a 90th-minute winner from David Mooney.

Goals from George Elokobi, Macauley Bonne and Matt Harrold guided them to a 3-0 lead but a late second-half fight back pulled it back to 3-3 before substitute Mooney saved the day as he netted in added time at the Crabble Ground.

Manager Justin Edinburgh made three changes for the clash with left-back Joe Widdowson returning from suspension, Lamar Reynolds and Matt Harrold moving into the starting line-up, in place of Dan Happe and Josh Koroma who were dropped to the bench.

Striker Dan Holman missed out due to being cup-tied, as he appeared for Boreham Wood in the Trophy earlier this season, when he was on loan at the National League outfit.

The hosts came out strong and got the first chance of the match in the second minute when defender Giancarlo Gallifuoco almost caught Dean Brill off guard with a looping header but the keeper tipped it over.

Chris Kinnear’s men piled on more pressure and in the fifth minute Brill had to once again pull off another save to deny Anthony Jeffrey.

It was then former O’s defender Connor Essam’s turn to have a go at goal in the early stages as he found himself at the near post, but his volley went wide.

The visitors finally got a chance of their own in the 12th minute as Adams won the ball and drove forward before releasing Harrold but his effort was saved by Mitch Walker’s feet.

The O’s then won a free-kick, which Elokobi stepped up to take, but his effort hit the wall before falling to Coulson’s feet who saw his effort blocked in the 15th minute.

Ten minutes later Dover’s Mitch Walker pulled off a great save as he denied Reynolds, who picked up the ball on the edge of the box, cut inside and drove a shot on goal.

Back at the other end and it was Brill who had to steer clear an effort from Gallifucoco as the defender headed towards goal in the 29th minute.

Orient broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Elokobi squeezed the ball home after being picked out by Jobi McAnuff’s corner.

Dover almost found an equaliser just three minutes later as Nortei Nortey sent Brill scrambling, but he managed to palm away.

The first chance of the second half came when Mitch Pinnock’s deep cross was met by Ryan Bird but it was straight at Brill in the 48th minute.

A minute after the O’s doubled their advantage when Bonne picked the ball up with his back to goal around 30 yards out, turned and smashed it into the top corner of the net.

Edinburgh’s men then made it 3-0 when McAnuff’s corner was headed away to Elokobi, who headed it back into the danger area and Harrold was there to tuck it home.

Dover managed to claw one back in the 57th minute when Pinnock had a shot which found Bird at the back post to direct it home.

But the O’s then went close to getting a fourth in the 68th minute when a clever ball into the box by Ebou Adams almost saw Harrold bundle the ball into the goal but Walker managed to get hold of it.

Seven minutes later the visitors went close again when Harrold released Bonne and the forward was one-on-one with Walker who made a good save.

A long ball forward was then headed away by Coulson but Pinnock noticed Brill off his line and lifted the ballover him to make it 3-2 in the 81st minute.

Two minutes later Daniel’s shot was saved and the rebound was converted by Bird to draw the game level.

But substitute Mooney came to O’s rescue in the last minute as the experienced forward lofted the ball over Walker and sealed a 4-3 win to help them progress to the last eight.
