The 21-year-old was delighted to score his first home goals as an O’s player during the victory over Guiseley

Leyton Orient forward Macauley Bonne is full of confidence after his treble on Saturday and looking to be the top goalscorer in the National League this season.

The former Colchester United striker scored two first-half penalties at the weekend against Guiseley before grabbing his hat-trick with a fine late finish.

It takes Bonne onto seven goals for the campaign and joint-top of the scoring charts alongside Dave Tarpey, who has now left Maidenhead United to join Barnet.

When asked if he was aiming to be the National League top goalscorer this season, the forward confidently replied: “Of course!

“The first thing I checked after the win on Saturday was to see where I was in the top goalscorer ranks.

“Now Tarpey has left Maidenhead to join Barnet I am the top goalscorer and I am absolutely buzzing with that.”

Bonne had found the net four times before the weekend, but all of his efforts had been on the road.

He struck the winner at Maidenhead, a brace away to Woking and a consolation in the 6-1 loss at Bromley.

Therefore, the 21-year-old was delighted to get off the mark at home and equally happy to go on and claim the match ball.

“Before Saturday I hadn’t scored at Brisbane Road for Leyton Orient yet, so to get three I am buzzing,” said Bonne.

“It is a massive weight off my shoulders to get my first at home and to go and get the hat-trick is brilliant.”

The U’s academy graduate has flourished since moving to Orient from League Two side Colchester.

Bonne scored five times during pre-season, but took a little while to get off the mark in the National League.

He failed to find the net against Sutton United, Solihull Moors and Maidstone United, but grabbed his first goal for the club at Bromley.

Since then he hasn’t looked back and Bonne now feels he will score in every much he plays such is his self-belief.

“As a striker once you get your first one, you feel confident and like you can go and get another and another and that’s what I have been doing,” said the Essex resident.

“I have seven now and I am not going to stop scoring. I know myself I won’t. I am confident and I can’t wait for the next game.”

The season is only a month old, but it appears Bonne made the right decision to leave Colchester in search of first-team football.

Steve Davis is getting the best out of the forward and he has nearly scored more goals during the first eight games of this campaign than his whole career, having struck eight in 91 games prior to joining Orient.

Bonne said: “I felt, as a player at my age, I needed to get a run of games to get into the flow of things and credit to the gaffer.

“He is the one who has given me a chance and hopefully I am proving to him that I can score goals in this league.”
