The 50-year-old discusses his relationship with chairman Nigel Travis and interim chief executive Marshall Taylor

Martin Ling knows his first task at Leyton Orient is to sort out the problems at Brisbane Road left by the previous regime and then they can start focusing on moving the club forward.

The new Director of Football has been a busy man since officially starting his role at O’s on Friday morning.

Ling discussed his relationship with new interim chief executive Marshall Taylor and how he will take his time over key decisions and not rush into anything.

“I met Marshall for the first time on Friday morning and Matt (Porter) knows him a wee bit, so Marshall has Matt to lean on as well and that is always important for a little bit of advice and the club needs some work,” said the former Orient manager.

“We have got to sort the problems first and then move on. You can’t start moving on until you sort the problems, so there is a process, but we also know we need to do it quickly.

“In the same breath, I won’t rush anything I do. If you rush into things you start making the wrong decisions, so even if it takes a week or two longer than in an ideal scenario, I will make sure I give it everything and have done all due diligence on a first-team coach for example.

“We want people to come into the building that I feel are right and that can take the club forward and have the same thinking of the people running the club and myself.”

Orient’s new Director of Football explained how he has got to know new chairman Travis very well since meeting earlier this year.

Both had hoped to be working at O’s sooner than the end of June, but are delighted to finally be in the building and ready to get to work.

Ling added: “I have been talking to Nigel for the last five to six weeks about his plans and whether I was the right person for him.

“There is no denying Matt was a big component in that because Matt knows me and knows Nigel, so I have got to know him an awful lot more than I thought was possible.

“When we spoke five weeks ago we thought we were nearly there in terms of the deal getting over the line, but everything that is good in life takes a little bit longer to get and we have finally got the club.

“Now it is going to be a very busy period to get the right components in place in terms of staffing at coaching level and playing level.”
