Ex-Colchester United ace full of praise for boss Andy Hessenthaler and feels he has settled in well at his new club

Leyton Orient winger Gavin Massey was pleased to play a part in helping Jay Simpson get on the scoresheet at Wealdstone on Tuesday night.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men won 2-1 at Grosvenor Vale after last season’s top goalscorer found the net and Sandro Semedo rifled in from distance.

Massey, who joined the League Two club last month from relegated rivals Colchester United, impressed in the first half.

It was his jinking run that helped set up Simpson and he was looking forward to getting more minutes under his belt at Dover Athletic on Saturday.

“That’s why I’m here and in the team to put the work in and score and assist goals,” said Massey, after his display at Wealdstone.

“I probably could have had the shot myself, but I see Jay pull off and it was a nice little finish. It’s good for my confidence and I’m looking forward to Saturday now and building on that.

“I didn’t have the best of view, but Sandro’s a good player and has a bullet of a shot. It was a great finish by him and hopefully it adds to his confidence.”

The ex-Colchester winger only linked up with his team mates for pre-season at the start of this month.

He has enjoyed working with the O’s coaching staff, however, and settled quickly with the east Londoners.

Massey believes the week trip to Umbria for intense training and one friendly fixture with Italy’s under-19 side has played a part in him getting to know his team mates better.

“The coaching staff have been great and the training has been different class,” said the 23-year-old.

“Andy likes to put his point across. It’s been good for me because he knows exactly what he wants from me and I know exactly what I have to do for him.

“It’s been great so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of it and hopefully a bright season.

“Sometimes it can be a bit difficult being a new signing and everything, but the boys have been great. They’ve welcomed me in and got some friends here now.”
