Leyton Orient winger Gavin Massey praised Paul McCallum’s contribution during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in League Two.

The ex-Dulwich Hamlet forward was introduced in the 58th minute and seven minutes later set up the only goal of the game.

McCallum knocked down Myles Judd’s cross after wrestling with Stanley defender Omar Beckles and Jay Simpson found the net to give O’s a precious victory.

“Paul wrestles with defenders, he is a handful, and wins his first and second balls and argues with the referee. He gets the fans up and that is what Paul does,” said Massey.

“Obviously Jordan Bowery was different class working the channels, but second half we probably did need something a little different and Paul helped out Jay a lot and the rest of the boys.”

It was a good move by Orient to break the deadlock with Massey and Judd initially combining well on the right.

Simpson had wasted a good first half opportunity, though when presented with another, he delivered.

The former Arsenal striker has only found the net three times this season, but Massey hopes Saturday’s winner will boosts his confidence.

He added: “I was joking with Jay saying it’s probably the worst goal he has ever scored, but we want players like him to have their confidence up.

“I wasn’t here last season, but Jay is a key player to Leyton Orient so getting the goal is only going to boost his confidence and hopefully the teams.”

Simpson’s scuffed strike was enough to earn O’s a win at Brisbane Road for the first time since August 30.

The poor run of form has seen both Andy Hessenthaler and Alberto Cavasin lose their respect jobs.

With Andy Edwards now in charge, Orient are going back to basics and it helped them keep a clean sheet last weekend.

Judd, 17, played his part in his third start for the east Londoners at right-back and impressed his colleague.

“Myles is a good, young lad willing to learn. We were back to basics on Saturday and when a young player comes in, he is going to play to basics,” said Massey.

“You can’t expect somebody like that to come in and do the extraordinary so that’s what we’re doing.

“He knew my movement and I knew what he was going to do and I’m hoping he gets a few more opportunities because he deserves it.”
