Campaigner Tarik Khan called for private landlords to be licensed in a heated debate on the housing crisis when he addressed party delegates from all over the UK at Labour’s annual conference in Manchester.
Tarik, from Bow in London’s deprived East End, represented Tower Hamlets Labour Party which submitted a motion to bring in a national private landlords register and calling for building 200,000 new homes a year if Ed Miliband wins next May’s General Election.
He condemned rent rises and “extortionate service charges” in the private sector in a major speech at Labour’s annual conference attended last week by 10,000 party members.
