PLANS for a 252-room hotel on the edge of Canary Wharf have been given the go-ahead.

Tower Hamlets council gave the green light for the empty site in West India Dock Road to be transformed into a part three, four and 16-storey building.

As well as 252 rooms, the hotel will include a restaurant, caf, bar and conference rooms.

And the Atich Group which is behind the plans says the development will provide around 150 jobs for young people.

The council's Strategic Development Committee discussed the application in February.

But at the time members said they were "minded to refuse it" as it was too bulky, would have a big impact on the surrounding area, there had not been an adequate amount of public consultation and it would lead to the loss of car parking spaces.

But councillors gave their approval the second time round, as developers offered a payment of 125,000 towards leisure and recreation facilities in the area as part of the Section 106 contributions.
