O’s boss reflects on excellent 1-0 win over Coventry City
Leyton Orient manager Fabio Liverani lauded the spirit of his team after Josh Wright’s goal helped them beat Coventry City and move them out of the bottom four in League One.
O’s have been stuck in the relegation places since losing 2-0 to Colchester on January 24, but their 1-0 success at the Ricoh Arena moves them up to 18th and gives them an excellent opportunity to beat the drop.
Wright’s first goal for the club, 12 minutes from time, was enough to earn Orient a fifth win from their last nine matches.
Their Italian boss praised the character of his side afterwards and insisted it is one of the reasons why he never contemplated leaving during the tough times.
“The spirit of the players is something that has never been lacking,” Liverani told leytonorient.com. “It has been here since I arrived.
“It is the reason why I was always happy to stay even during moments when we were losing games and struggling. The spirit was always present.”
Orient’s manager also felt the victory against the Sky Blues makes up for them failing to beat either Barnsley or Crawley recently.
O’s couldn’t break down play-off hopefuls Barnsley at Brisbane Road on March 17 and had to be contest with a goalless draw.
And their relegation worries were heightened following their 1-0 defeat to Crawley on March 21.
But this triumph against Coventry helps make up for those frustrating results and puts them two points clear of danger with seven fixtures remaining.
Liverani added: “It was a very important game, a six-pointer and these three points are extremely important for us.
“I think we recovered the two points we lost against Barnsley tonight and the draw we deserved at Crawley so it was a very important win.”
