Italian boss admits maybe subconsciously club felt they were safe after beating Coventry on April 1
Leyton Orient could be relegated from League One on Sunday, but manager Fabio Liverani has admitted they maybe thought they were safe following their 1-0 win against Coventry on April 1.
Josh Wright scored 12 minutes from time against the Sky Blues to move O’s out of the bottom four for the first time in two months on that day.
The success also took them onto 45 points and two clear of the relegation places with seven matches remaining.
But Orient have failed to win since, picking up just three points, and are now facing relegation even if they beat Swindon Town on Sunday.
Their Italian manager has taken full responsibility for allowing the players to believe they were safe.
“I think up to the Coventry game we had done fairly well. The players and the team had improved in the way we played,” said Liverani.
“But one of the things I could have done better and I take full responsibility for this, maybe I haven’t transmitted to the players the fact that we hadn’t achieved anything after Coventry.
“We had 45 points, but nothing was done yet. We were not safe and maybe we lost our guard a bit.
“In the last few games since we couldn’t manage to make points that would have kept us in a better position.”
Liverani went on to admit maybe “subconsciously” the club felt they were virtually safe following the victory against Coventry.
Now only a favourable sequence of events in Orient’s favour will stop them plying their trade in League Two next season.
But despite this, Liverani is still hoping to remain as O’s manager and see out his contract.
He added: “As I have already said before I have got two more years on my contract here so I don’t have a problem to remain in charge as manager.
“Maybe subconsciously we thought we had achieved the final goal of the season after Coventry, but goals have to be achieved to be celebrated.
“I take all responsibility for everything that has not been achieved, though, since I have been in charge.”
