Union action in Tower Hamlets protesting 55m cuts to council budget promises to gather pace in the coming weeks.

The Tower Hamlets Joint Trade Unions have organised a ‘No to Con-Dem Cuts in Tower Hamlets’ meeting at Central Foundation Girls School in Harley Grove next Thursday (February 3).

The borough’s UNISON secretary, John McLoughlin, will also address the meeting and organisers have invited Mayor Lutfur Rahman and Rushanara Ali, MP for Bethnal Green & Bow.

Lutfur Rahman and his cabinet set out council budget cuts totalling 55m for the next three years earlier this month which will go before a full council meeting on February 23.

The Hands Off Our Public Services (HOOPS) group plans to join the latest demonstration against the cutting of the Education Maintenance Allowance and rises to tuition fees in central London this Saturday.

University students are meeting at 10.30am at Queen Mary University while secondary school pupils will meet at Morpeth School at 10am.

On Monday, the East London Teaching Association, the Tower Hamlets branch of the National Union of Teachers, held a meeting attended by over 120 teachers.

A HOOPS spokesman said there was “overwhelming support for a ballot on strike action against the cuts.”
