The deadline for any party member wanting to run as Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets is 5pm today.

The local party executive is inviting applicants who want to take on Mayor Lutfur Rahman at the polls in April.

Whoever is selected also has to face Labour’s John Biggs, the London Assembly’s budget chairman selected earlier this year to run for mayor who has represented east London at City Hall since 2000.

Contenders are also being selected from the Conservatives and other political parties in what is likely to be a tough campaign to unseat independent mayor Rahman for control of Tower Hamlets’ annual £1.2 billion budget.

Wannabe candidates for the Lib Dems who meet the criteria are being urged to contact the party’s returning officer, Anthony Fairclough—but only have until 5pm to lob their applications in.
