The iconic Brick Lane in the heart of London’s East End is staging a street festival on Sunday aimed at keeping traders up to date.
The ‘Brick Lane and Friends’ festival has children’s storytelling workshops all day, a vintage market, street entertainment and history walks and looking to the future.
A trail is being laid out that takes in all the sights and sounds of the historic neighbourhood, from times past to the present day—but organisers are also looking to future business expansion.
“Trends and tastes change and we can’t be complacent,” warns Cllr Motin Uz-Zaman, Tower Hamlets cabinet member for economic growth.
“So we’re helping businesses adapt and stay competitive along Brick Lane, which is one of London’s top entertainment and tourist attractions.”
Restaurants along the famous ‘Curry Mile’ are offering new menus created for Sunday’s festival as part of a Brick Lane improvement project.
Brick Lane is an area with a history of generations of migration to the East End, now home to vintage markets, world-renowned record shops and restaurants.
The festival runs from 11am until 5pm as a collaboration between the council, Spitalfields Market and the Old Truman Brewery.
The area is being cordoned off from traffic 9am to 7pm. Nearest Underground: Aldgate East. Overground: Shoreditch High Street.
The Brick Lane regeneration programme aims for economic growth in the area and promotes the famous thoroughfare as a tourist destination for entertainment and historical interest.
