Council workers have ended the year with a massive clean-up in east London joining residents to spruce up neighbourhoods from Whitechapel to Poplar and Mile End.
Tower Hamlets councillors joined the clean up along with householders to hit the East End streets for a second week-long Big Clean Up event in two months.
They collected up 38 sacks of litter this time and cleaned 23 areas of graffiti and fly posting.
“Littering is a blight to our community,” Mayor John Biggs said. “But these clean-up events make a difference and have a positive impact.”
The clean-up was part of the local authority’s ‘love your neighbourhood’ campaign where the public was asked to nominate roads and open spaces where they felt a clean up was needed.
Volunteers joined the big clean-up with the council supplying the equipment, which included scraping graffiti off walls and picking up tin cans at Cotton Street in Poplar (pictured), removing fly postings in Brick Lane, litter picking in Mile End Gardens and cleaning up a back alley in Whitechapel.
Another week-long clean-up is planned in March to coincide with the national ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ activities.
