Voters in London’s East End are being asked how many councillors they think should be on the local authority.
The independent Local Government Boundary Commission wants the public to decide the number of future elected representatives on Tower Hamlets council.
It has already taken evidence from the Mayor, councillors and political groups and now wants the public’s views with a six-week consultation which closes on May 8.
Proposals are already on the table to reduce councillors by six—having 45 instead of the present 51. That would mean redrawing ward boundaries if the idea went ahead.
A second consultation in November would then look at reducing wards, with final recommendations next spring that would come into effect for the 2014 local elections.
