A campaign to ‘put the Bang back into Banglatown’ - drawing inspiration from a Hong Kong street market - was backed by councillors last night.
Petitioner Dan McCurry addressed the chamber to ask for support in regenerating the Brick Lane area by emulating the colourful streetlights and banners of Temple Street Market in Hong Kong.
He said: “Brick Lane has become a late night drinking hole and perhaps a one stop shop for prostitutes.
“The whole point is to lift up the area. This can be a really fantastic centre of culture, not just for London but for the whole of this country”, he added.
The petition was supported by councillors, with cabinet member for resources Cllr Alibor Choudhury pointing out that £150,000 was allocated in the last budget for the regeneration of Brick Lane.
