A young woman, who became the first cyclist to be killed while riding a Boris Bike, died from multiple injuries.
Philippine De Gerin-Ricard, who lived in Bromley-by-Bow, died at the notorious Gardiner’s Corner gyratory system, near Aldgate East Tube station, despite efforts to save her by paramedics from the Royal London Hospital.
The 20-year-old student had come to London to improve her English during the third year of her business management course at a private school in Avignon, France, and was doing work experience at Marks & Spencer.
She was travelling on a hired ‘Boris Bike’ when she was in collision with a lorry during Friday’s evening’s rush hour.
The accident happened where the A11 Whitechapel High Street crosses Commercial Street and the A13 Commercial Road.
A post-mortem at Poplar Mortary established the cause of death as multiple injuries. An inquest has been opened an adjourned.
