Half student grants on offer by Tower Hamlets are snapped up in first week

Half the 400 Higher Education grants being offered for school-leavers in London’s East End who are going on to university have been applied for in the first week of the four-month scheme.

The Higher Education award scheme launched on July 1 by Tower Hamlets council which runs till October has received 200 applications so far.

“We have up to 400 grants to give away,” said Tower Hamlets cabinet member Oliur Rahman. “We would hate for any to be left over.”

The grants fund is the first bursary scheme on its scale in the country, with £1,500 available to students starting higher education in September.

It was brought in to help student living costs in the wake of the government abolishing Maintenance allowance. Closing date for applications is October 11.
