Campaigners fighting to preserve the character along the Regent’s Canal are celebrating after plans for a six storey housing development at Bow Wharf was rejected.
The planning committee at Tower Hamlets council had already rejected the planning application on the grounds that the height and design would have a detrimental effect on the heritage value of the Conservation Area.
But the application was deferred to enable council officers to set out detailed reasons for refusal and these have now been accepted by the committee —with three councillors voting in favour of refusal, none against and one abstaining.
Historian Tom Ridge campaigned against the proposals on behalf of the East End Waterway Group. And the group was recently received support from London Assembly member Jenny Jones, of the Green Party.
The planning application had been submitted on behalf of Canal & River Trust, the charitable trust overlooking the waterways, which had argued that the scheme would bring benefits such as a new open piazza while preserving historical features such as Stop Lock Bridge.
