INDEPENDENT mayoral candidate Lutfur Rahman has hit out at the decision to take the marathon route away from Tower Hamlets.
Councillor Rahman, who was the Labour leader on the council until May this year, is running as an Independent after he was de-selected by Labour as its mayoral candidate.
He was elected in 2002as a Labour councillor for Spitalfields and Banglatown on the edge of the original High Street 2012 marathon route and was a councillor when London won the Olympic bid. He was re-elected as a councillor in 2006.
He is now an Independent councillor for the ward.
He said: “This decision to dump Tower Hamlets from the marathon route is completely indefensible. I fully support the Advertiser’s campaign to reverse it, but the new Mayor also has to fight to get the wider regeneration legacy of jobs and affordable housing the East End was promised.”
