A curry house in London’s East End closed down by Tower Hamlets Council’s health inspectors for “a brazen infestation” of cockroaches and mice has been fined £40,000.
The inspectors found “a severe infestation of cockroaches and mice brazenly appearing in droves” in the kitchen of the Dhaka Biryani restaurant in the Mile End Road.
The premises, which was not registered on the council’s food safety system, were closed down in July last year after mouse droppings were found on a chopping board, on shelves where food was stored and on plastic cups and spoons.
Owner Shahadat Hossain, from Colebert Avenue in Mile End, admitted four summonses of breaching food hygiene regulations at Thames Magistrates’ court.
He had been warned about the problems, magistrates heard, but failed to take action.
His premises reopened after a few weeks when the council was finally satisfied the infestation had been completely eliminated.
