MP Rushanara Ali has called for renewed Government pledges to tackle Aids to help 100,000 people in Britain living with HIV.
She met activists from the Stop Aids Campaign at a Parliamentary event to mark last week’s World Aids Day, aimed at tackling the epidemic.
“It is critical for government investment in HIV and Aids to be sustained so we can save lives,” she said.
“There are seven-and-a-half million people going without medication—the Government needs to make sure all people with HIV, including 100,000 in Britain, are provided with treatment.”
Eight million people worldwide are getting treatment, with Aids-related deaths declining from a peak of more than two-million in the mid-2000s to 1.8 million in 2010. But there are still huge challenges remaining, Rushanara pointed out.
