The refugee crisis engulfing Syria and neighbouring middle eastern countries has prompted a call to action from MP for Bethnal Green and Bow Rushanara Ali.

Speaking in her capacity as shadow minister for international development, Ms Ali urged the government to take a more proactive role in tackling the region’s humanitarian crisis.

Having recently returned from a trip to Lebanon, which borders Syria, she said: “Syrian refugees in Lebanon who have fled atrocious conditions in Syria are currently living in dismal conditions, packed in informal settlements, garages or tiny apartments.

“Urgent action is needed to increase assistance to Syrian refugees and support Lebanese host communities who are dealing with the arrival of thousands of Syrians each week.”

The call follows increased international pressure on the Syrian regime over alleged the use of chemical weapons on its own people during the conflict.
