The Thames waterfront along New Union Wharf on the Isle of Dogs in east London is getting a £64 million regeneration revamp with the go-ahead for 400 new energy-efficient riverside apartments.
Homes planned range from one to four bedrooms, a mix of social rent, shared-ownership and outright sale.
The new housing complex includes spacious outdoor areas such as winter gardens and balconies.
The project was named ‘best scheme in planning’ at the National Housing awards last month because of its level of involvement with families living on the former council estate it replaces.
The families have been involved in the plans and designs and even took the decision themselves whether to go ahead with the regeneration. The revamp began on Monday with the start of demolishing Heron Court on the old estate.
The first residents move into the new complex in two years’ time. But the whole project, part-funded by the Mayor of London, will take East Thames Housing until 2021 to complete.
