A delegation from Bangladesh has met Bethnal Green & Bow MP Rushanara Ali on a trade promotion visit to get ex-patriots to send more money home.

Members of Sylhet’s Chamber of Commerce & Industry have been in Britain to promote foreign investment in the city’s ‘special economic zone’—the first in Bangladesh which was set up in 2009.

Bangladesh is likely to meet its target of becoming a middle-income country by 2021, the MP was told.

“Thousands of expatriates send money home to their families every year,” she said later. “The delegation hopes to encourage them to think about that as investing in cities like Sylhet.”

The 1,000-acre ‘special economic zone’ was set up to attract foreign investment, especially from expatriates.
