Bad housing and the struggle to find decent accommodation can affect people’s health such as obesity and mental stress, a conference of Tower Hamlets professionals has been told.

Many facts that determine health are connected with social and economic problems, they heard, while improvement was needed in childhood obesity, mental health and life expectancy.

“Housing has an impact on financial, physical and mental wellbeing,” Tower Hamlets deputy mayor Sirajul Islam said.

“We have made it a priority to fight for a housing market that works for everyone, whether more genuinely-affordable homes, tackling rogue landlords or building more council homes.”

The conference staged by Poplar Harca and Gateway housing bodies with Tower Hamlets Council and Housing Forum, looked at ways to improve people’s physical activity, diet and social connections through networks which have been set up linking GPs, schools, local authority and community organisations.
