Unemployment has shot up among the youth in London’s East End while other Olympic boroughs bordering Tower Hamlets have received an economic boost from the Summer Games, MPs have been told.

Jobless figures rose in June and September at the height of the Games, Bethnal Green & Bow MP Rushanara Ali told the Commons.

She slammed “the failure of the Government to tackle long-term youth unemployment” in Tower Hamlets during Treasury Questions. It had shot up by a massive 141 per cent in the past 12 months, she pointed out.

Rushanara urged the Government to “put a tax on bankers’ bonuses” to pay for 100,000 jobs for school-leavers.
